Work based learning (WBL1)

For this project we have been tasked with coming up with a container shipping company that stands out from the crowd with enticing colours, logo and qualities.

Existing Company research:

Examples of current companies…

MAERSK

Maersk is among the biggest and most popular shipping company around at the moment bringing in a “net profit of 2.7 billion dollars in the first three months of the year”

(Via: The Loadstar) https://theloadstar.com/extraordinary-market-conditions-bring-maersk-a-2bn-q1-profit-bonus/

They also have around 708 ships delivering anything from dry cargo like electronics, paper and retail products, Refrigerated cargo such as food and drink along with special and dangerous cargo.

Maersk have multiple ways to transport cargo to it’s ports and customers such as ocean travel with container ships, Inland travel with heavy duty lorries, Air freight with giant cargo planes and Intercontinental rail with long cargo trains.

Mind Mapping for company name:

This was my idea for a shipping company called “World Wide Shipping”. The original plan for this company was to have all of its statistics in the middle so it compromised with both speed and security.

World Wide Shipping Logo Idea:

These are both my logo ideas for World Wide Shipping both shaded and non shaded.

The plan for my second company idea, “Salvation (Shipping)” was to have it be the most secure company around with high security at the cost of slow travel time.

Salvation (Shipping) Logo Idea:

Image.jpeg

This is my logo idea for Salvation (Shipping) with a ship anchor as the letter “V” in the name.

Here To There was my final idea, this is the name I like the most although I feel like the attributes need to change. The original idea was to have this company focus on speed and only having it travel to China and back because of their huge mass production. This the the company name I am most likely going to use but change the stats/ attributes.

Logo Ideas:

Final Logo Idea:

This is going to be the overall idea for my container logo. A simple yet affective with my colour choice.

Here 2 There Brand Guidelines:

These are the brand guidelines for Here 2 There, these show my colour pallet, and 2 different type faces.

Truck:

Poster:

This the the Here 2 There poster in industrial areas.

Socials ad:

The Here 2 There Facebook advert.

Process:

This the font I have decided to use, but I plan on making some miner adjustments to it.

This is me replacing the default text with my chosen font which is called “Bandero”

Here I am selecting at arrow like shape on the bottom of the letter “H” to add my own touch to the font and also make it similar to the “T” and other parts of the fonts default form.

This is the after effect of the arrow on the “H”.

I did the same on the top of the first “H” to add my touch to more of the font.

This is the end result of the typography design for my logo.

This is me adding a circle with arrows either side but pointing ni the opposite direction to represent the companies movement from “Here To There

Advertising and Promotion (Disney)

For my advertising module I have chosen to research and create a piece on the 100 years of Disney celebration.

Demographic:

I want to have a very wide ranged audience of of both new Disney fans and new older fans that have grown up with the Disney magic throughout the years. Along with a range of age groups, I also want to appeal to different parts of the world such as Europe, Middle east and Africa.

Media methods:

There are many methods of media I could use to get this celebration message across such as popular social media’s like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. As well as social media however I will also think about other methods such as billboards, bus stops/shelter advertisements and magazine advertisements. Out of the suggested methods of advertising, I have decided to optimise my image for an Instagram post/ad and a bus stop poster.

Planning:

These are the notes I made when thinking of what I could and what I needed to include for this project.

The sketches shown above are the concepts I created when making a decision on what my final idea would become.

My idea:

I have spent a some time thinking of ideas for what I could do as an idea given the time I have left for this project. The best idea I have come up with is… I am going to use an image of a 100 years crest and make it the Disney colours, I then plan to use an image of the Disney castle in the middle of the crest and then add a few extra details.

The crest icon a plan to use is from: https://www.vectorstock.com/royalty-free-vector/100th-anniversary-celebration-logo-vector-24365705

The castle image I plan to use is form: https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/04/18/what-does-a-recession-mean-for-disney.aspx

Development process:

I have started working on the 100 years crest by removing the background.

I have added the castle in the background and now need to Re-colour the crest

I have changed to colours to that of Disney

I have now added a small message into the banner

This would be my design on the side of a bus stop or shelter

This is my design on an Instagram post, out of the two I prefer in on the bus stop a little bit more just because I feel as though it stands out more

Corporate Identity

What is Corporate Identity?

Corporate identity is the way in which a business decides to present itself to the public. This can vary anywhere from…

  • Company name
  • Logo
  • Typography
  • Colour
  • Images
  • Tagline/ Slogan

Information from (https://www.logaster.co.uk/blog/examples-corporate-identity-for-inspiration/)

Project task:

For this project I have been asked to create a Logo using corporate identity methods. To start the project I had to choose when type of brand I would be representing, I for this I have chosen a home entertainment company

Logo examples:

Sony

Sony's Compact Block Camera for Professional Imaging Applications | FRAMOS

The Sony logo is an example of how simplistic minimal design can still go recognisable as the logo is purely one word in bold font. Certain elements of this logo could be used in my logo as I really like the straight to the point bold typography.

Sony Corporate manual analysis

The corporate manual for Sony that I will be analyising is from 2005 and has most likely been improved by now. However in current state of what I’m analyising the manual uses a weird font colour that clashes with the backgrounds repeatedly despite the background colour changing from grey to green to yellow, the mild grey font just doesn’t work with any of the them and is quite difficult to read. Another issue with the font is the chosen style as personally I am not a huge fan of it, this is a personal critique but I feel a few people would agree.

Moving onto the good things about the corporate manual, I feel like the manual is contains a high level of information and is well detailed on the companies corporate background. The manual also uses images and charts to show and indicate Sony’s success along with uses images a way to show how to use the logo and emblem.

As a whole, the Sony corporate manual conveys information and instructed detail on all branding methods and font sizes. However the visual layout for this information is poorly presented with font and colour choice being terrible to read.

Apple

Why Apple Needs To Renounce Forced Labour - Macworld UK
How to type Apple logo  on iPhone, Mac, Apple TV, Windows & more

The Apple logo is recognisable to almost everyone, spanning from a wide range of ages. The mostly black apple with a slight bite taken out of it, although not connected to technology will forever be seen as one of the most popular and successful tech companies. This is a prime example of how companies can get their logo to be successful and recognisable with the one image and no typography.

Apple Corporate manual analysis

This Apple corporate manual is from 2013 so is a little bit outdated, however I think this is a really good corporate manual because it contains a lot of information and the layout/ colour choice is really good.

The Apple corporate manual has 56 pages of content which while feeling like they could have used the same pages for some of the information, I feel like the information isn’t too overwhelming.

Throughout the corporate manual, Apple continue to use their signature colour scheme consisting of Grey and White which in itself is a great way to show how to use their branding. Another feature of the Apple corporate manual that I think more companies need to include is links to other sources of the information, this way if a reader requires anymore information they can just access the link.

To summarise this analysis, there’s not much I can find about this corporate manual that is negative. Throughout the manual they keep to the brand, have great use of images and a wide range of significant information.

Microsoft

Microsoft unveils its new logo, the first major change in 25 years - The Verge

Microsoft is a mega-corp that has it’s main focus on technology systems, software. The logo used by Microsoft features a range of colours including blue, green, red and yellow which are all intentional and have significant meaning. Blue represents Microsoft Windows, Red represents Microsoft Office, green represents Microsoft’s Xbox system and yellow is understood to represent hardware. (Information via: https://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonykosner/2012/08/26/microsofts-new-logo-and-the-mysterious-case-of-the-missing-yellow-square/?sh=1d9969a72d9b)

The Microsoft logo is more that just the Image of representative colours however as it also feature typography. The chosen typographic font featured in this logo is very formal but also shows the company strongly focuses on professionalism and bold success.

Microsoft Corporate manual analysis

The Microsoft corporate manual sticks to it’s branding throughout by using it’s company colours of orange, blue, green and yellow as some of the backgrounds for the manual. Another feature of this manual that I think is really good is the amount of detail they go into about the logo and what not to do with it.

This is my favourite corporate manual so far because it supplies the information needed without bombarding walls of paragraphs onto you. I also really like how the Microsoft corporate manual features a colour wheel and give a better view of the colours and shades they use.

Tagline/ Slogan

Through out the whole of advertising, companies have use small or catchy taglines and slogans to help the company become more recognisable. Whether through a short song, small rhyme or just the correct words used in the correct order to make something about the company stand out and much like your favourite movie quote be unforgettable and stuck in a consumers brain for hours. unrelated to my topic of home entertainment but a few unforgettable taglines and slogans are the Go Compare insurance song, McDonald’s famous “I’m Lovin’ it” and the Hastings car insurance jiggle which is just reciting the number you call but by doing it in jiggle form makes in timeless and unforgettable.

As for Home entertainment and tech companies, although they don’t use as recognisable tagline/ slogans a few that I have researched are Sony’s “Be Moved”, Microsoft’s “Be What’s Next”, Apple’s “Think Different” and BOSE’s “Better Sound Through Research”

Microsoft has filed trademark for their new slogan, 'Be What's Next'

My Idea

I have chosen to create a home entertainment company called “Steel”. The reason for the name Steel is because steel is a strong and sturdy material just like the product I’m going to be advertising.

Development

Potential Logo Ideas:

Analysing Corporate manuals

Skype: Having looked through the corporate manual for Skype I have come to the conclusion that it is useful in the information is provides although doesn’t come across well on presentation. The manual looks too simple and basic with it’s white background and grey writing, with a little bit of the Skype blue highlighting certain words of significance. An example of this is shown on page 3 of the corporate manual as they introduce their logo and icon. Only 2 logos and one icon are shown which I don’t feel is enough to show off your brand. The corporate manual as a whole looks more like a presentation one would do in secondary school on Microsoft PowerPoint

Colour Ideas:

Most home entertainment companies use colours such as black, white and grey, which I think looks sleek and professional, therefore these are some of the colours I plan to use on my logo. As well as having black and white, I’m still going to include a small amount of bright colour to simply draw attention to the brand via it’s logo.

Start of logo development:

Added the border

Resized the wording to fit where I want it

Trying to find a colour scheme that works

Final colour decision made

One more idea of detail and a way to make it stand out

I’ve made a last minute change to the logo by switching the colours around a little bit and I am much happier with this result.

Final result

I have also made an icon which will be on smaller ways of promotion

Alternate colour ideas

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-20.png

Advertising methods

Decided to create a billboard advertisement for the company

I have also created an Instagram advert for the brand, which I think is the best of my two advertising methods.

Josh Howden’s Graphic Design Project Blog

Hi, my name is Josh Howden and this is my development blog for my graphic design work done on this course.

I’m going to be updating this whenever I have research, analysis and full complete pieces to show off. Such as these pieces

(09/10/2020) Graphic Design CONTEXTUAL STUDIES (Josh Howden)

The Colour Wheel:

The colour wheel is an illustrative body used to show all types of colour including primary, secondary and tertiary.

Examples of primary, secondary and tertiary colours are:

Primary

  • Blue
  • Red
  • Yellow

Secondary

  • Orange
  • Green
  • Purple

Tertiary

  • Yellow-Orange
  • Red-Orange
  • Red-Purple
  • Blue-Purple
  • Blue-Green
  • Yellow-Green

Colour Theory

Contrasting colours is also known as complementary colours which are colours opposite each other of the colour wheel. Each segment on the wheel provides maximum contrast with it’s opposing colour for example lime green and purple.

Examples of colour features in companies

The instagram logo which I spoke about in last weeks work uses contrasting colours on it’s logo, the colours it uses are orange and yellows with purples and pinks which are two different sides of the colour wheel. I think the colour choice on the logo is also used to represent the different filters you can use on the app when editing you’re photos.

(01/10/2020) Graphic Design CONTEXTUAL STUDIES (Josh Howden)

Question: Find different advertising campaigns that use shapes in an interesting way and say why. Try to find campaigns or designs that use colour effectively and differently and comment on the effect of the colour(s). Find a design you like and say explain why you like it.

After reasearching a couple of logos and advertising campaigns here’s what I found…

With the Nike logo I think it’s really smart how they use a tick as their main symbolisation as a tick is usually connected to the right thing and this therefore makes the buyer feels like they’ve made the right decision in their purchase of a Nike product.

Out of the 4 logo I have found I think the most interesting one to use use shapes and colours is the Instagram logo. I like the Instagram logo because It looks simple but sends the message it needs to, that the app is for photo sharing and editing. As the app’s only focus is photos I really like how the logo is made to look like a camera by using only three shapes. To add to the simplistic shapes the logo also uses chart of colours that all fade into each other which in my opinion is a filters and contrasts you can add to your photos.

(24/09/2020) Graphic Design CONTEXTUAL STUDIES (Josh Howden)

Question: What does Graphic design mean to you? Write 250 words on your response and illustrate with 2 to 3 examples of Graphic Design that you like and say why? Those illustrations can be brands, promo website page etc

To me, graphic design is a way to show your creative freedom through colour, shapes and visualisation. Graphic design is also a way to see things differently and, in some aspects, see concepts in a more literal way.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of graphic design in game and movie poster because I like the way they the theme is perceived from the first look of the logo, background and chosen typography.

One movie logo I really like is the Avengers logo as seen below.

I really like this and think it is a great example as it shows off the theme of the movie from first glance. I strongly feel that if you showed this logo to someone who is oblivious of the franchise, they would easily be able to tell you that the film is a super hero action film. In my opinion the typography is a huge giveaway as it is bold and makes a point that film isn’t going to be slow and dramatic.

Another example of graphic design I like is in video games covers as games are a huge interest of mine. I find video game covers fascinating, as a good game case/cover will determine on whether a person buys it or not. The main thing I look for is whether I can see the theme of the game on the cover which I can often tell by the typography and detail on the front.

One of the best examples I can think of is a game called Skyrim, as this is a fantasy medieval game and although you cant see the fantasy side of the game in the cover anybody would be able to tell the game is not set anywhere near the modern era. The choice of typography for this game is phenomenal as it look just like something you would see on an ancient text from the early thirteen hundreds and already gives that feel before you even start playing the game.

Graphic Design Josh Howden (Project 1)

Covid 19

For this project I have been asked to come up with an awareness campaign for the Covid 19 virus that has been terrorising all parts of the world. Before I could start the research for this project I had to make decision of what topic to make people aware of out of

  1. Personal hygiene
  2. Physical Distancing
  3. Know the symptoms
  4. Kindness Contagion
  5. Myth-busting
  6. Do more, donate

I have chosen the symptoms because I feel like this is the main/ most important part of the virus that everybody needs to be aware of.

Symptoms:

  • Continuous cough
  • High temperature
  • Loss or change in taste
  • Loss or change of smell
  • Sore Throat
  • Shortness of breath

Visual symbols already being used for Covid 19 Symptoms.

These are some prime examples of the symbols already in use to show the Covid 19 symptoms.

Even without the wording underneath, the majority of these symbols would be understood.

Symptom posters used for Covid 19

These two posters are both examples of posters that display the symptoms of the Covid 19 virus, However one of them (in my opinion) is a lot better at displaying the symptoms due to the choice of colour displayed. The two posters both show simplistic messaging but the poster on the bottom is a lot more visually pleasing with its black background and bright outstanding lettering.

The two posters, while expressing the message they’re trying to convey could still be improved as in the environment they would be placed (which I think would be a hospital or doctors surgery) I feel like they would blend in with every other poster in there. These kind of messages need to be obvious and need to stand out from the crowd in order to pass on the message and make people aware of the symptoms.

Through research I have learnt that certain colours are better for the way peoples eyes see thing, this is called visual acuity which is also why in the bottom poster the writing is yellow as black and yellow is a great example of visual acuity.

Another example of Covid 19 symptom awareness.

Colour:

Colour is a great way show emotion, It can easily convey a message in which the colours used on the text or background determine the theme and seriousness of a situation.

When creating a visual representation of what symptoms to look out for, I think the best colours to use would be blue, turquoise, yellow, black and white.

As well as using colour it’s also important to have spaces of blank colour. Having this open space of colour is important because it breaks up columns of information and makes it easy to locate without making someone read through a lot of useless information for no reason. Using open space also makes the visual poster etc look less like a magazine article and allows the reader/ viewer to feel free from being smothered by information that is not relevant to them.

Demographic:

My choice in demographic is really important as it will determine what type of awareness I will create.

For younger audiences with an understanding of social media between 10 and 35 a digital advert would been more ideal as in a social media advert etc, whereas for somebody that is 40+, a poster would be best as they would be placed in surgeries, shops and news papers.

The age range I’m gonna choose is going to be the older generation of 40+ and I’m going to create a poster that you would see in a surgery or supermarket. When doing this I need to make sure the poster stands out from the crowd as symptom awareness is really important. I need to create a poster that draws people’s attention away from anything else and focuses on the main points without any useless information.

Now that I have a chosen age group I need to choose a location to present the symptoms of Covid 19. I have made a list of potential locations and need to choose one as a main focus out of…

  • Newspapers
  • Medical surgeries
  • Supermarkets
  • Cafes
  • Pubs/ Restaurants

After giving it some thought I’m going to make an awareness piece for the symptoms in a supermarket as they are everyday essential locations even in a lockdown/ pandemic. There are so many different places in a supermarket I can make awareness apparent.

These places include:

  • Supermarket trollies
  • Banners outside in car parks
  • posters at the checkout
  • Shopping bags

Artists for inspiration

A lot of artists have different styles and I have been researching a few, the artists I have been looking at are…

Sebastian Thibaul

Christoph Niemann

Saul Bass

Olly Moss

However the artists I’m gonna use as inspiration is Olly Moss because I really like the style and how he uses an image as a canvas for an even more detailed image.

I’ve had an idea to do a similar piece to Olly Moss but with the outline of man wearing a face mask and the smaller detail in the middle will be symptoms of Covid 19 with an approbate colour choice, I’m also going to try and avoid using text as I trust the visual art will be clear enough itself

Development

Started out by adding the border.

Followed by outlining a generic male body type but keeping in the style of Olly Moss I’m avoiding facial detail

I have now using the brush tool drawn the lungs of the male figure. I have outlined the lungs in red to show the effect of bad lung/breathing that the virus can cause.

Done the same thing to the head as I have to the lungs to symbolise headache as well as water droplets to indicate sweat due to high temperature.

Now I’m in the detail adding stage I have added lightning bold to symbolise aching and a face mask to show the importance of wearing a mask.

The final touches of detail I’ve added is a thermometer and I title of “Know the symptoms”

The final piece

This is the final art piece and my approach of making people aware of the symptoms.

I have since added a list of the Symptoms and the name of a website people can visit to make things a little bit more clear.

Alley way Proposal (2nd year)

I have decided to create my 3D alley way model  in the city of London in the 19th century. I have chosen London because it is the city I am most common out of the options we were given, however I don’t know much about the time era as I was obviously not present back then. The idea I have seems simple but we my ability on 3D modeling software It may longer than expected if it is to be at its not quality.

Back story/ Timeline:

I have gone for a simple explanation/ backstory in which there was a fight 30 minutes before the scenes shown in my alley model, as a result of this there will be items knocked over windows smashed and blood on the floor and walls. I might also have a few objects that were used as weapons such as bricks crowbars and baseball bat.

Aesthetic:

For the lighting I’m am going to use a mild darkness to suggest that it has just turned night along with a darkened windows as the building is no longer open due to the time of day.

As for the textures, I will most likely use the traditional brick texture used and seen in London itself  to let people know where my model is set without anyone guessing. However with the floor I could use a range of different textures to symbolize the setting but I personally think that cobbled flooring would fit my scene the best.

Ethical and legal:

In my project there won’t be any legal or ethical issues.

Sound research:

Diegetic Sound:  A diegetic sound is a sound where you can see the source. An example of this is would be something like a stereo that can be both heard and seen within the setting.

Non-Diegetic Sound: A non diegetic sound is a background sound where you can’t see the source in which it comes from. An example of this is like a busy crowd or bad weather such as rain.

Sounds in my model: In my model I will be using a mild rain sound effect and maybe a scurrying rat sound effect. These effects would be used as non-digetic sounds.

As for my Diegetic sound I’ll most likely use the sound of a street sign that it faulty so keeps turning off and on again.

Asset List:

Wooden plank (weapon)

Rubbish bin

Smashed bottle

Non-smashed bottles

Street lights

Street signs

Personal Development

My final grade from last year was a pass.

Last years I think I did well on my concept art which is good as that is the main thing I enjoyed doing.

I think I need to improve my texturing the most as its the main thing AI found myself getting stuck on.

This year I am focusing on achieving a merit and would like to improve my skills in 3D modeling and texturing.
